Our Senses

We are continuing to think about Ourselves and what our bodies can do.
We have played tasting, touching, listening, looking and smelling games and linking our senses to the parts of the body we use.
We felt jelly and custard and described it as "cold" " slimy" and " gooey".

We smelled ginger, cinnamon and vanilla essence.

We listened to sounds around us and guessed what they were and tasted different fruits.

We also listened to the Five Senses song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXXiyIGqliE&safe=active and joined in touching the right part of our body to match the sense.  Why not try singing along at home?

We have started our busy fingers sessions which builds up our finger strength and control ready for writing.


We have used some of our busy fingers sessions to consolidate our maths learning, using and making shapes, describing them and naming them.


We had another visit from Ben, who played a chasing game with us, where some of us pretended to be rabbits with tails, and the rest of us had to chase the rabbits and catch their tails ( bibs stuck down the back of our shirts). This game warmed us up nicely for practising football skills and learning to strike with the laces so that we shot the ball into the goal with greater precision.
 
 

 

  Here are some of the other activities we have been up to:


 
Making music with the lentils and pasta and using the language of capacity - full, half full, empty.


Using number jigsaws to count and match number to amount.
 
Making play dough faces, naming facial features and talking about how we look the same and different from each other and our families.

Making shape collages with the magnetic shapes and using the opportunity to describe and match shapes.

Next week, French day is on Monday October 2nd. The children will be listening to French songs and rhymes, making French flags and tasting croissants. Your child may wear red, white and blue instead of their school uniform on this day. Ooh la la!


Next week we are learning about Autumn and the changes around us. You could draw your child's attention to the colours of the leaves on the trees and what has fallen from the trees (acorns, conkers and leaves). Your child could bring in some autumnal objects to show us and leave in our investigation area.

Ourselves

This week we have learning about different body parts through singing songs like Tommy Thumb, If You're happy and You Know It and Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
We have read This is Our House by Michael Rosen and thought about how we look the same and how we look different. We have also talked about how we can be good friends by sharing and taking turns.
We made paper people thinking about what features they had.

We have been exploring different textures by feeling a variety of objects such as cottonwool, foam, sand paper, coral, shells and furry material. We talked about how they feel and used some great describing words.

"prickly"  "tickly"   "rough" " soft" " smooth"

We have been singing number rhymes including 5 little monkeys, 5 little Ducks and 5 Little Speckled Frogs. We have been counting objects 1:1 and matching numbers to the amounts we have counted.


We have had a visit from Ben who helps us learn P.E. skills. This week he taught us how to dribble our footballs and keep them still. We had lots of fun!!

Welcome to our Nursery!

What a busy start the children have had to the start of their Sandridge journey!


The children have explored the indoor and outdoor environment - building, making, imagining, creating, climbing, painting and lots more. Here are a few of our photos to show you the fun your children have been having.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
 


 
 

 

 
 
 

 

 

At the same time as enjoying ourselves, the children have been adapting to the rules and routines at Nursery and learning about sharing, listening, lining up, how to sit at carpet time, how to wash our hands before snack, tidying up, taking turns, putting up our hands when we want to share our thoughts during whole group sessions, stopping when we hear the tambourine and making new friends.

Next week, as well as continuing to visit these skills, we will be exploring Shape. You could spot shapes with your child while around your home or out and about, naming them, finding two shapes the same or talking about whether they are straight or curved.

The over arching theme for this term is Ourselves & Our Family - thinking about body parts, our similarities and differences, what we look like, what things we like doing and who is in our family.  

If you would like to help your child at home, you could look in a mirror together and talk about how your child looks like you and how they look different. Naming parts of the body and singing songs like Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes would help too.

Please could you send a photo of your child to school from a recent family event such as a birthday or special day out. This would really help open up a discussion with your child. We would also really appreciate a photo of who lives in your home too. This of course, may be the same photo. We will look after your photos and return them.
